Riley Sale hit four free throws in the final 42 seconds of the game as the Ladycats help on for a 59-56 District 4-5A victory over Abilene Wylie Friday in Aledo.
The victory improves Aledo to 18-8 overall and 2-0 in District 4-5A, the only team without a district loss. The Lady Bulldogs fell to 17-8 overall, 2-1 in district.
Sale finished with nine points. Elizabeth Allanach led the Ladycats with 17 points while Audrey Pearce added 11.
Haley Herrin had eight points, including seven in the first quarter to help Aledo get off to a hot start. Kylie Anderson and Maddie Shumway each scored seven points.
Aledo looked to make quick work of Wylie when it jumped out to a 15-2 lead less than five minutes into the game only to see the Lady Bulldogs come storming back. Herrin scored seven points in that 15-2 run to start the game. Wylie outscored Aledo 10-3 over the final 3:15 of the first quarter to cut the lead to 18-12 entering the second quarter.
The second quarter belonged to Wylie. The Lady Bulldogs scored the first 8 points of the quarter to take a 20-18 lead. Wylie’s full-court pressing defense gave Aledo fits in the second quarter.
Aledo ended the long drought with a bucket with 3:10 to play in the half to tie the game at 20. Wylie outscored the Ladycats 18-7 in the second quarter to take a 30-25 lead into halftime.
The Ladycat’s height advantage resulted in offensive rebounds and points in the paint in a dominate third quarter. Aledo outscored Wylie 26-13 in the third quarter and had an 8-point lead going into the fourth quarter.
But the Ladycats struggled to find offense in the fourth quarter. They were outscored 13-8 in the quarter, with half of their points coming in the form of Sale’s free throws in the final 42 seconds of the game.
