Arlington Martin came up with huge plays on special teams in the second half to rally past Aledo and break the Bearcats’ 136-game national record for district victories with a 35-21 win Friday at Aledo’s homecoming game.
Aledo had a 21-10 lead at the half and looked like they were on the way to another district victory.
But Matin got a huge 82-yard kick return to start the second half to set up a field goal to trim Aledo’s lead to 21-13. Aledo had two long offensive drives in the third quarter but came away with no points.
First the Bearcats turned the ball over on downs at the Martin 23-yard line.
Aledo then used some huge runs from Wyatt Dorsey and Izzy Roberts to give the Bearcats a first and goal from the Martin 1. However, the Martin defensive line broke thorough on first down and Dorsey never got the handoff and Martin recovered at the four yard line.
Martin then faced a fourth-and-two at their own 23 when punter Kevin Grant took a fake punt 77 yards down the far sideline for the score on the first play of the fourth quarter to cut Aledo’s lead to 21-20.
Aledo was forced to punt from their own 45 on the next possession, and Martin took over at their own 38- yard line after a 17-yard punt.
Martin marched to the game-winning touchdown on eight plays when quarterback Chase Devoll threw a 13-yard pass to Malik Mason, then Chase Devoll added a two-point run for the conversion.
Trailing 28-21 with 4:58 left in the game, Aledo ended up starting at the 3-yard line when the team had to fall on a muffed fair catch attempt.
Aledo went three and out, but managed to get the ball back at the their own 25 with 2:47 left in the game. However, the Bearcats turned the ball over on downs at the 33 after a pair of incompletions.
Martin’s Kaden Phillips then scored on a 33-yard run to put the game away.
Aledo’s loss overshadowed a big night from running back Dorsey, who had 210 rushing yards on 20 carries.
The Bearcats outgained Martin 347 to 328, but the Warriors had those 82 yards on the kick return that don’t show up in the box score.
