The Everman 9th Grade A team used a fumble return for a TD and a 70-yard punt return that set up another TD in Thursday’s 27-13 victory over the Aledo Freshman Orange team at Bearcat Stadium.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard just 18 seconds into the game when a defender picked up an Aledo fumble and ran 40 yards untouched into the endzone.
Everman forced a three and out on Aledo’s next possession then had a 5-play drive on their first offensive possession that resulted in a 10-yard TD run. The PAT kick gave Everman a 14-0 lead after the two teams had only combined for 10 offensive plays.
Aledo’s Garrett Key had an 80-yard TD on the kickoff return to give the Bearcats some momentum. The PAT kick made it 14-7 with 5:38 left in the first quarter.
The momentum was short lived. After the teams traded punts, Everman went on a 10-play drive that used up more than half of the second quarter clock. The Bulldogs got a 9-yard TD run to make it 21-7 with 4:36 left in the half.
However, the Bearcats bounced right back with a pair of long runs by Taylon Kessler. The two-play drive included a 25-yard Kessler run, followed by a 22-yard TD run. The PAT kick hit the upright, leaving the score 21-13 with 3:49 left in the half.
Things looked to be going Aledo’s way when the Bearcats recovered an Everman fumble two plays later.
However, on fourth-and-four from the Everman 22, the Bulldogs stopped the Aledo threat with an interception in the endzone.
Midway through the third quarter, Everman got a 70-yard punt return to put the ball at the Aledo 10. It took just one play for the Bulldogs to score the game’s final TD.
Turnovers and penalties kept the Bearcats from mounting a comeback.
