The Carroll Dragons fell behind 21-7 in the first half of the 6A D2 UIL state championship game than rallied in the second half but could never catch up in the 24-17 loss to Austin Vandegrift.
Vandegrift finished with 441 yards of offense, including 193 rushing yards. While the Vipers rushed the ball well all night, Carroll was limited to 53 rushing yards. Carroll quarterback Angelo Renda finished with 351 yards and two touchdowns to keep the Dragons close.
The Vandegrift defense also came up with three turnovers, a pair of interceptions and a fumble recovery.
Carroll had a chance to cut the lead to three points late in the game, but the Viper defense came up with a stop after Carroll got to first and goal inside the five.
The Dragons added a field goal late to cut the lead to seven then attempted an onside kick, but Vandegrift recovered to put the game away.
