Hauss Hejny wasn’t having a good night throwing the ball but he more than made up for it with one of the most important touchdown runs this season.
Hejny scored on a 57-yard quarterback draw on a third-and-11 play with just 1:35 left in the game to rally the Bearcats to a 25-19 victory over Denton Ryan in District 3-5A Division I. Aledo earned the district championship with the win.
Hejny finished with 182 rushing yards on 19 attempts, but that run with 1:35 left helped Aledo overcome a 19-17 Ryan lead.
Aledo dominated the first half, jumping out to a 17-0 lead. Davhon Keys had touchdown runs of 3 and 19 yards to push the Aledo lead to 17-0 with 7:19 left in the first half. However, the Ryan offense came to life on its next possession.
Ryan quarterback Braeden Mussett, who finished with 156 rushing yards and two TD runs, got the Raiders on the board with his 62-yard TD run.
Mussett’s running got the Ryan offense moving on their first possession of the second half and he capped the drive with a 20-yard run to cut Aledo’s lead to 17-13.
Hejny threw for just 63 yards and was intercepted three times. However, it was a turnover over on downs on their own 35 yard line that cost Aledo the lead.
Mussett threw a 32-yard TD pass to Jose Melendez with 7:11 left in the game to give Ryan a 19-17 lead, setting up Hejny’s heroics.
Hejny also had a big run for a first down in the final minute to allow the Bearcats to run out the clock.
The defense came up with big plays all night. Keys had a fumble recovery and the defense came with with a stop with less than four minutes left in the game to set up Hejny’s game-winning TD.
Racine Guillory had 19 carries for 108 yards before being injured in the fourth quarter for the Bearcats. Aledo improves to 9-0 overall and 7-0 in district and have next week off before closing out the regular season at Brewer.
