The Aledo defense scored touchdowns on an interception return and a fumble return to help the Bearcats overcome a sluggish offensive performance to open District 3 5A with its 112th consecutive district victory.
The Bearcats won 38-13 despite scoring just 24 points on offense. Aledo came up with three turnovers total, as Boogie Owens had an interception and a 52-yard fumble return for a touchdown. In the fourth quarter Cooper Cyphers intercepted a tipped pass and took it 49-yards for a score.
Owens’ fumble return was set up when linebacker Ben McElree sacked Northwest quarterback Leddie Thompson, causing the fumble.
Aledo’s most explosive offensive play came just four plays after Owens’ second quarter interception. With Aledo holding just a 10-6 lead with 3:53 left in the first half, quarterback Hauss Hejny threw a 41-yard TD pass to Tyson Timms.
Hejny led the offense with 97 passing yards, including the long touchdown. He also had 61 rushing yards, including a 13-yard run for Aledo’s first TD.
