Aledo Shuts Out Shoemaker to Open Playoffs

Caleb Pope had a pair of TD runs for Aledo.

No QB1, no problem.

With quarterback Hauss Hejny out after pulling a muscle in last week’s regular season final, Aledo used the ground game and a stout defense in the Bearcats’ 37-0 victory over Killeen Shoemaker in Thursday’s 5A Division I bi-district game.

Both teams came into the game at 8-2, but Aledo dominated the game from the start.

Hawk Patrick-Daniels and Caleb Pope each had two rushing touchdowns and linebacker Davhon Keys came in as a wildcat quarterback to get a 3-yard TD run.

The defense also scored when Lawson Moore tackled the Shoemaker quarterback for a safety.

The Bearcat defense also got interceptions from Aven Lawrence and Jaden Allen.

Only three of Shoemaker’s 10 possessions in the game produced positive yardage. In the second half, The Wolves picked up only one first down and netted minus-5 total yards.

Patrick-Daniels got Aledo going with his 72-yard TD run on Aledo’s second possession of the game to make it 7-0. Patrick-Daniels finished the game with 12 carries for 108 yards.

Lawrence’s interception came on the second play of the second quarter. Lawrence returned the interception 37 yards to the 5 to set up Aledo’s second touchdown. Caleb Pope scored from the 5 to make it 14-0. Caleb Pope finished the game with 13 carries for 62 yards and two touchdowns.

Midway through the second quarter, the Grey Wolves went for a a fourth-and-three at the Aledo 45. That turned out to be a bad decision when Andrew Parkhurst sacked the Shoemaker quarterback for a 14-yard loss to set up Aledo’s third touchdown.

Quarterback Brant Hayden had a 21-yard run to give Aledo a first down at the 10. Patrick-Daniels scored on the next play to make it 21-0 Bearcats with 4:55 left in the first half.

The defense held Shoemaker to a three-and-out to give Aledo the ball back at Shoemaker’s 47 yard line. Jalen Pope had an 18-yard run on a reverse, then Caleb Pope finished the drive with a 6-yard TD run.

In the first half, Aledo had 175 rushing yards, while Shoemaker finished with 11 carries for two yards. Aledo finished the game with 293 rushing yards.

The Aledo defense kept up the stellar play in the second half.

Shoemaker was held to a three-and-out to start the second half, then Aledo marched the ball 55 yards on 13 plays. Keys two yard TD run out of the wildcat formation made it 35-0 with three minutes left in the third quarter.

By the middle of the fourth quarter Aledo brought in freshman quarterback Gavin Beard. To the 1-yard line before Aledo turned the ball over on downs. On the very next play, Moore’s sack in the endzone gave the Bearcats their final two points with a safety.

Aledo had one more chance to score when Ryan Cox had a 26-yard run down to the Shoemaker 1 yard line. However, the Bearcats ran out the final minute and a half by kneeling in victory formation.

Third-ranked Aledo, 9-2, advances to the area round to play the winner of Lubbock Cooper and El Paso Bel Air.
