Ladycats Advance to Regional Semifinal

Aledo Gets Walkoff Victory over Joshua

Marina Taveras’ walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh gave the Aledo Ladycats a 2-1 victory over Joshua in the 5A Regional quarterfinal 1-game playoff Thursday at Chisholm Trail High School.

Aledo’s Ana Flores reached base with one out when a short fly to right field couldn’t be caught by the Joshua second baseman.

Flores stole second base to get into scoring position. Taveras then singled on a ground ball up the middle and when the throw home was over over the catcher and Flores scored the winning run to set off an Aledo celebration.

The Ladycats advance to regional semifinals and will play the winner of the Monterey vs. Lubbock-Cooper playoff series. Lubbock-Cooper won game one of that series 8-3.

Aledo got strong pitching from Brenlee Gonzales and Taylor McKean, who combined for one earned run and eight strikeouts. Gonzales got the start and pitched five innings.

The lone run Joshua scored was on a ground ball that took a high hop in front of home plate. Gonzales fielded the ball then tried to tag the runner at the plate but the runner was ruled safe.

The Ladycats tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth with some small ball of their own. The run scored on a walk to Austyn Marriage, a bunt single by Addie Perry and another bunt single by Flores.

Aledo then loaded the bases and nearly blew the game open when Kyleigh Pawlak hit a screaming fly ball to left center. Joshua’s centerfielder made a leaping catch after running more than 20 yards to keep the ball from getting over her head for a three-run double.

Aledo had left nine runners on base over the first six innings before Taveras got the walk off hit in the seventh.

Aledo improves to 31-3 and McKean got the win by pitching two innings in relief. She struck out four of the seven batters she faced.

Aledo’s defense didn’t commit an error in the game. In fact the Ladycats came up with a few defensive gems of their own. Catcher Austyn Marriage came up with a big play just after she was forced to enter the game after an injury to starting catcher Kennis Marx. Marriage had a wild pitch that bounced off the backstop and she caught the ball as it bounced back to her than got back to the plate to tag out a Joshua runner.

Second baseman Delaney Rosser made a diving attempt that hit her glove and knocked it off her hand. Rosser scrambled to the ball and threw the runner out to end an inning.
