Brock got the ball first in overtime and was facing a fourth-and-goal from the 3. Coach Billy Mathis sent in the field goal team then called a timeout. The offense went back on the field and the team ran a play they have practice every day and were saving for a special moment.
“You know it’s one of those deals,” Brock Coach Billy Mathis said. “Our offense is too good. I have so much confidence in those guys and so much confidence in Coach Christenson, our offensive coordinator. I said let’s go win this thing.”
The play started with tight end Nathan Jones snapping the ball to quarterback Tyler Moody, who was in shotgun and then rolled to the right. Jones did not line up at center. He was in his usual position at the end of the line when he snapped the ball.
After snapping the ball he paused for a second before leaking out uncovered into the end zone. Moody threw a perfect pass right to his hands and Brock took a 35-28 lead.
“It’s one of those plays we worked on every day, all year long,” Mathis said. “We saved it for a big-time moment like that. We run it and it’s wide open.”
As explosive as Mount Vernon looked in the third quarter, the Brock defense shut the Tigers down in overtime. Three running plays left the Tigers facing a fourth-and-eight. Tiger quarterback Braden Bennett got pressured and threw the ball into the endzone where it was intercepted by Brock’s Carson Finney and the celebration began.
Brock (15-0) will make its third trip to the UIL state championship game and first since 2017. The Eagles will play Lorena (13-2) at 3 p.m. next Thursday Dec. 16 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
Mount Vernon could do nothing wrong in the third quarter as the Tigers scored 21 unanswered points to take a 28-21 lead against the Eagles.
The Tigers got an interception to stop Brock’s first drive of the third quarter, and several long passes from quarterback Braden Bennett helped the Tigers start their rally.
Bennett accounted for 369 of the Tigers’ 406 total yards. He had 21 carries for 105 yards and threw for another 264. In the third quarter, he had touchdown runs of 1 and 22 yards.
Mount Vernon tied the score at 21-21 with 2:53 left in the third quarter and on the extra point Brock was called for a 15-yard penalty. The 15-yards was marked off before the next kickoff, so Mount Vernon used it as an opportunity for an on-sides kick, which it recovered at the Brock 31.
Two plays later Bennett scored on his 22-yard run to put Mount Vernon up 28-21.
But the Eagles never quit.
Brock used an 82-yard drive that used up move than five minutes in the fourth quarter to tie the score when Eli Potts scored on a 20-yard run on a jet sweep.
