Ladycats Hold Off Bridgeport, 43-39

The Ladycats rallied from a 9-point deficit to stretch their winning streak to seven games with a 43-39 victory over Bridgeport, the 10th ranked team in Class 4A.

After Aledo rallied to take the lead in the second quarter, the second half became a defensive wrestling match. Both teams finished the game in double bonus and Decatur cut the Aledo lead to 2 points by making a higher percentage of their free throws.

But the Ladycats hit 6 of 10 free throws over the final 1:30 to hold off Decatur. Still, the Sissies had the ball with a chance to tie with 17 seconds left in the game when sophomore forward Audrey Pearce forced a jump ball with three seconds left to keep Bridgeport from getting off a shot. Haley Harrin then iced the game with a pair of free throws.

The Bridgeport Sissies started the game hot and jumped out to an 11-2 lead midway through the first quarter. Aledo senior guard Elizabeth Allanach, who led the Ladycats with 14 points, scored 5 points during a 7-2 Aledo run to finish the first quarter.

The Ladycats outscored Bridgeport 15-8 in the second quarter to take the lead for good.

Both teams struggled in the third quarter, as Aledo outscored the Sissies 5-3 to take a 29-24 lead to the fourth quarter.

Aledo’s front line all played well against Bridgeport’s big front line. In addition to Allanach’s 14 points, Pearce added nine points and Maddie Shumway scored eight.

Junior guard Riley Sale also added 8 points and she was a key ball handler in the Ladycat’s ability to break Bridgeport’s full-court trapping defense.

The Ladycats improve to 15-7 with the victory, while Bridgeport falls to 13-4.
