Aledo junior running back Jase McClellan ran for 218 yards and five touchdowns as The No. 1 Bearcats scored on every possession in Friday’s 46-6 District 5-5A Division II game against Burleson.
McClellan, who has scored five or more touchdowns in three of Aledo’s four district games, now has 18 touchdowns in the four district wins.
It was the second week in a row that Aledo (6-0, 4-0) has not had to punt. The victory, coupled with Burleson Centennial’s 45-0 victory over previously undefeated Cleburne, leaves the Bearcats in sole possession of first place in the district race. Centennial (6-1, 4-1) is in second place and Cleburne (5-1, 3-1) falls to third place.
The Bearcats also had a 42-yard TD run from Tre Owens and a 10-yard TD run from Hampton Fay.
Quarterback Jake Bishop completed 11 of 16 passes for 142 yards as the Bearcats finished with 515 total yards of offense.
The Aledo defense got things going by holding Burleson to a three-and-out to open the game. The Aledo offense then took the field for a night where they were never stopped short of the endzone. McClellan capped the first drive with a 2-yard run.
Burleson’s second drive was also a three-and-out.
Sophomore receiver Jo Jo Earle, who earlier in the week got a scholarship offer from Texas Tech, started the drive with an 18-yard reception. He also had receptions of 15 and eight yards in the drive before McClellan finished the drive with a 10-yard run.
Aledo drove 61-yards on 10 plays on their third drive, which was again finished with a McClellan touchdown run. Like many of his runs on the night, he broke several tackles on the 14-yard run.
Burleson’s offense came to life on it’s fourth drive as they converted a pair of third downs to march to the red zone late in the half. The Elks ran the clock down to 2:10 left in the half before kicking a 23-yard field goal to cut the lead to 21-3.
That was plenty of time for the Bearcat offense.
Bishop, who rushed three times for 28 yards in the game, had a pair of scrambles to move the ball to the Burleson 42. Tre Owens got one carry on the night but he made it count. The safety broke several tackles near the line before he broke to the left sideline and outraced the defense for the 42-yard TD run. Smith’s PAT kick gave the Bearcats a 27-3 halftime lead.
McClellan had his longest run of the night on the second offense play of the second half. He got a big hole on the left side of the line then raced down the left sideline before he finished the run stiff-arming one defender away and dragging another defender into the end zone. Smith’s PAT kick made it 34-3.
The Elks put together one of their best drives of the game on their next possession, only to be turned away by the Bearcat defense after having a first-and-goal at the 3.
On fourth down, defensive back Jake Ford broke up a pass on the left side to end the threat.
Aledo then drive 97-yards for their sixth touchdown of the night. McClellan had a 47-yard run in the drive then got his fifth touchdown run from three yards out to make it 40-3.
Burleson responded with their second field goal of the night to make it 40-6, then the second team Aledo offense got into the scoring act to close out the scoring in Aledo’s 79th consecutive district victory.
