This time around, Brock left no doubt about who was the better team.
Brock jumped out to a 42-0 lead as the Eagles rolled to a 49-14 win over district rival Whitesboro in the Region 1 final Thursday night at Globe Life Field in Arlington.
It was 28-0 at halftime as Brock’s defense held Whitesboro to 51 total yards in the first half. In the first meeting between the two teams this season, the game was tied at 21-21 at halftime before the Eagles pulled away for a 42-21 victory.
Brock, 14-0, advances to the 3A Division I state semifinals against the winner of the Mount Vernon vs West regional final to be played Friday.
That gives Brock’s players one day to enjoy Thursday’s victory before they have to start to think about an opponent in the state semifinals.
Brock’s offense moved the ball right from the opening kick. The Eagles moved all the way to the Whitesboro 16 before turning the ball over on a missed field goal attempt.
However, Brock’s defense showed it came to play on the very first Whitesboro offensive play when Zach Brewster intercepted a pass and returned the ball to the Whitesboro 7. Two Kutter Wilson runs later the Eagles had a 7-0 lead.
“Our boys came in ramped up,” Brock Coach Billy Mathis said of the Eagles’ fast start. “They are easy to get going. They know what it takes to go out and win. To see that relentless effort that they played with tonight is very exiting.”
Brock also got an interception from Reid Watkins and a blocked punt from Carson Finney in the game.
“When you get pressure on that quarterback and he has to scramble out, a lot of times they start staring a guy down. Our DBs and linebackers did a great job reading (the quarterback’s) eyes and going to the ball and getting those turnovers,” Mathis said.
The only down side of the game was Wilson leaving the game early after getting hit. However, Mathis said Wilson could have gone back in the game but with the big lead there was no reason to put him back in the game.
In his limited time, Wilson finished with 12 carries for 79 yards and two touchdowns.
However, the Eagles didn’t miss a beat when sophomore Brett Tutter took over at running back, which coach Mathis credited to the offensive line. Tutter finished with 94 yards on 19 carries and three touchdowns.
“I was nervous in the beginning,” Tutter said of being thrust into the game. “I have to give credit to the offensive line. They work their tails off everyday and they’re great.”
Brock also got a pair of touchdown catches from Eli Potts from 34 and 24 yards. Quarterback Tyler Moody completed 18 of 28 passes for 222 yards and the two touchdowns.
