Strawn turned in an impressive performance in the 1A Division II UIL State Championship game, winning 73-28, as the Greyhounds mercy ruled Motley County with 3:09 left in the third quarter.
Freshman running back Grayson Rigdon led the Greyhounds with 4 rushing touchdowns and 4 passing touchdowns as Strawn finished its five-game playoff run by ending each victory via the mercy rule. Rigdon rushed for 222 yards and passed for 159 yards as he was named the offensive MVP.
There was no drama for Strawn in Wednesday’s game, but a lot of good football.
Motley County actually jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the game after Strawn fumbled the ball away on its first possession.
“I think we were just trying to play too fast,” Strawn coach Dewaine Lee said of Strawn’s two first quarter fumbles.
After the Greyhounds settled down and took a 14-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, the next two quarters were a Strawn offensive track meet.
The Strawn defense played lights out from the very start of the game. The Greyhounds came up with four turnovers, three fumble recoveries and an interception. Strawn also stopped Motley County on downs three times. Motley County was 0-3 on third down and 0-3 on fourth down.
Strawn Senior Lorenzo Garcia was named the game’s defensive MVP.
After the second fumble, Strawn scored touchdowns on nine consecutive possessions.
The Strawn offense was moving the ball so well, the Greyhounds only faced fourth down once in the game. That fourth-down play was converted when Rigdon took the ball around end for a 38-yard TD run.
