Stephenville Shuts Out Kilgore to Win 4A Division 1 State Title

Stephenville opened a new football stadium this fall that included a special room to display the school’s state championship trophies. After Friday’s 10-0 win over Kilgore in the 4A Division 1 state championship game, the Yellowjackets have one more to add to the collection.

Stephenville football now has 7 championship trophies to display.

After a scoreless first half, Stephenville needed just three plays to score.

Thre drive started with gains of 4 and 28 yards by running back Zyler McClendon and then a 40-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Trot Jordan to Adan Jergins.

Stephenville coach Sterling Doty said it was just execution that made the difference in the second half offense. He said they had a running play they felt would work but they didn’t execute it in the first half. After running it twice it gave them single coverage on the outside.

Stephenville added a 41-yard field goal from Brighton DeVive early in the fourth quarter and the Yellowjacket defense made that stand up.

The Stephenville defense came up with three interceptions and a fumble recovery and held the Bulldogs to 150 total yards in the game.

“We felt like is we could stop the run and stop their screen game we could slow them down,” Doty said of his defense.

An interception by linebacker Hudson Butchee ended Kilgore’s first possession of the game. Kilgore’s second possession ended in a fumble, recovered by Cooper Fergason. An interception in the end zone by Cash Cribbs in the second quarter kept Kilgore off the board.

In the fourth quarter Stephenville came up with a turnover on downs and an interception by Willis Jackson.

Doty said he felt like his team beat the three best teams in 4A in their run though the playoffs, including West Plains in the regional final, Celina in the semifinals and Kilgore in the finals.
