Smithson Valley Runs Past Highland Park, 32-20

Smithson Valley ground out 297 rushing yards to win the UIL 5A D1 title with a 32-20 victory over Highland Park Saturday, Dec. 21 at AT&T Stadium.

The Scotts took an early 14-6 lead on a couple of long passes from quarterback Buck Randall. The first covered 49 yards to Canon Bozeman and the second covered 73 yards to Benton Owens. However, those two plays accounted for nearly a third of Highland Parks total offense and Smithson Valley took away the big plays later in the game.

Smithson Valley took advantage of field position and its strong running back to outscore Highland Park 20-6 over the remainder of the game.

Smithland Valley quarterback Cade Spradling had 147 rushing yards and one rushing TD, while running back Brad Sowersby had 152 rushing yards. Spradling also threw for 61 yard and a TD.

Smithson Valley also got four field goals from Trent Amaya. The two teams set a record for most made field goals in the 5A D1 title game with six.
