Muenster quarterback Casen Carney rushed for 79 yards and one TD and threw for 162 yards and three more touchdowns to lead the Hornets to a 28-0 victory over Shiner to win back-to-back 2A Divison 2 State Championships. Carney was named the offensive player of the game.
All three touchdown passes went to Garrett Hess as the Hornets jumped out early and never trailed in the Thursday’s game at AT&T Stadium.
It was a rematch of last season state title game, but without the drama. The Hornets scored late last year to win 36-29.
This year Muenster forced a fumble on Shiner’s second offensive play and scored seven plays later on Carney’s 4-yard run to make it 7-0 with 8:28 left in the first quarter.
The Hornets scored on their second offensive possession when Carney threw a 10-yard pass to Hess. That TD was set up by a 51-yard pass to Hess.
The Hornets finished the season with a 14-2 record.
Muenster’s third touchdown came on a 34-yard pass from Carney to Hess in the third quarter. The fourth touchdown came on a 12-yard pass from Carney to Hess.
Muenster coach Brady Carney said the defense was able to lock in to a plan for the game because of last year’s championship game. The defensive game plan allowed the Hornets to post a shut out.
