Grant Mooney ran for 195 yards and three touchdowns while quarterback Brant Hayden passed for 2 touchdowns and ran for one to lead the Bearcats Freshman A team to a 44-28 victory over Denton Guyer Thursday at Bearcat Stadium.
Hayden also passed for 158 yards in the game.
Aledo jumped out to an early 6-0 lead when the Bearcats marched 69 yards in six plays in their opening drive of the game. Mooney, who carried the ball five times for 61 yards in that opening drive, scored around the right end from 12 yards out to give Aledo a 6-0 lead less than three minutes into the game.
Guyer’s touchdowns all came on big plays and the Wildcats got one two plays later when the quarterback kept the ball on the option for a 72-yard TD run and the PAT kick gave Guyer its only lead of the game at 7-6.
Aledo came right back to take the lead when Hayden hit receiver Christian Hillman for a 26-yard TD pass to give Aleod a 12-7 lead with 0:37 left in the first quarter.
The Aledo defense came up with a big play on Guyer’s next possession. The Wildcats completed a long pass but one defensive back stripped the ball and Dillon Vasquez scooped up the fumble and returned the ball all the way to the Guyer 44.
Hayden hit Blake Cook for a 25-yard pass to help the Bearcats move the 56-yards on seven plays for the score. Hayden’s 2-yard run and Mooney’s run for the PAT conversion gave Aledo a 20-7 lead.
Mooney added a 35-yard TD run just before the half to help Aledo open up the lead to 28-7 at halftime.
The Aledo Freshman B team shut out Guyer 12-0, however Guyer took a 28-8 over the Aledo White team.
