Ladycats rally to earn 1-1 tie against Stephenville

Sophomore forward Grace Ornelas scored on a shot from 20 yards with 7:59 left in the game as the Aledo Ladycat soccer team earned a 1-1 tie with undefeated Stephenville Friday night in a girls’ non-district soccer match at Bearcat Stadium.

The win kept the Ladycats, 8-0-3, from losing their first game of the season while Stephenville, the top-ranked team in 4A, fell to 10-0-1.

The Honey Bees had taken a 1-0 lead at the 8:45 into the game on a penalty kick that found the corner of the net just out of the reach of a diving save attempt from goalie Emma Davis.

Stephenville had the Ladycats on their heels for much of the first half, but Aledo came out after the half as the team that controlled the ball for much of the second half.

Davis made several good saves in the game to keep the Ladycats close.

Ornelas took a pass from freshman Ashlyn Laughley in small open area between four defenders and immediately ripped a shot into the net to tie the game.

Aledo also had several chances to earn the win later in the game but the horn sounded with the game still tied.

The Ladycats have another home game Tuesday against the second-ranked team in 4A, Midlothian Heritage.
