Ladycats edge Paschal, 2-1

Ashlyn Laughley and Grace Ornelas scored while goalie Emma Davis made a key save off a late free kick to preserve the Ladycat’s 2-1 victory over Paschal Friday in the semifinals of the Moritz Kia Tournament of Champions soccer tournament.

Laughley, a freshman forward, opened the scoring when she got free on a counter attack and beat the Pascal goalie to the right corner of the net with 15:03 left in the first half.

Ornelas, a sophomore forward, added a goal early in the second period on a play that started with an Aledo corner kick. Aledo kicked the corner short and eventually got a pass that went to the back post where Ornales hammered it into the net with 33:01 left in the game.

The Ladycats had several other good chances to add to the 2-0 lead early in the second half, but the Paschal goalie came up with good saves to stymie the Aledo chances.

Paschal got one goal back with 24 minutes left in the game and had several good changes to get the equalizer.

However, Davis stopped their best chance with a diving save off a free kick from 25 yards with 7 minutes left in the game.

The Ladycats will now play in the championship game of the tournament at 5:30 Saturday.
