Aledo Freshman Black quarterback Ayden Harper ran for two touchdowns and threw for another to lead the Bearcats to a 20-12 victory over Burleson.
Harper ran the ball 18 times for 140 yards, while he was 3 of 8 passing for 90 yards. One of the completions was an 82-yard TD pass to Joseph Romeo.
The Bearcats fell behind 12-0 when Burleson got a 65-yard fumble return TD in the first quarter and an 80-yard TD pass in the second quarter. But those two big plays were all the scoring the Elks would get.
After the Elks scored to make it 12-0 with 4:56 left in the first half, the Bearcats roared back with two quick touchdowns.
Two plays after Burleson’s second TD, Romeo caught a short pass on the right sideline then outraced the defense for the 82-yard TD to cut the score to 12-6.
On the first play of Burleson’s next drive, Davis McClung recovered a fumble to give the ball back to Aledo.
Harper capped the six-play drive with a 6-yard TD run and Juan Baca added the extra point kick to give Aledo a 13-12 lead with 34 seconds left in the half. The big play on the 45-yard drive was a 20-yard run by Conner Smith.
Aldo put together a 11-play, 67 yard drive in the third quarter to open a 20-12 lead. Harper capped the drive with a 1-yard TD run.
