PEASTER – Junior quarterback Gunner McElroy threw for 304 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead the Greyhounds to a 56-12 victory over Alvord Friday at home.
Peaster, which scored the first eight times it had the ball, scored three touchdowns in the opening 5:28 to take command of the game early.
Junior running back Tramar Gilbert rushed for 108 yards on 15 carries and had TD runs of 11 and 6 yards. Gilbert also had a 5-yard TD reception and on defense he had one of three Greyhound interceptions.
Peaster intercepted Alvord quarterback Jacob Martin on two of his first three passing attempts. Colton Smith stopped Alvord’s first drive with an interception, and on the Bulldogs next possession Gilbert came away with his interception.
Caden Duer, who had the third interception by Peaster, returned a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown and had a 33-yard TD reception.
“We thought it would be a closer game. They have some talent, but our defense just got after it and shut them down,” Gilbert said. In addition to the three interceptions, Peaster also forced Alvord to turn the ball over on downs at their own 16 late in the second quarter.
After the game Gilbert said he felt like the Greyhounds were ready to compete for a playoff spot in their second year of varsity football.
“Honestly, I think we can go to the playoffs this year,” Gilbert said. “We’ve got talent and we’ve got skill. Our o-line is bigger and stronger. We’ve been in the weight room. I think we have a chance for the playoffs this year.
