Aledo’s Brenlee Gonzales threw a 4-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts to lead the Ladycats to a 2-0 victory over the Burleson Centennial Spartans Wednesday in game one of the Regional Final playoff series.
Aledo got both of their runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Third baseman Kyleigh Pawlak tripled on a fly ball that bounced to the wall in right. Gonzales put the ball in play to get the winning run home when her ground ball to got under the third baseman’s glove for an error.
Courtesy runner Grace Heath advanced to second on a sacrifice fly by Kennis Marx. Heath then went to third on a wild pitch and scored on an infield single by Rylee Marx.
Those were all the runs Aledo needed as Gonzales often fooled Centennial hitters with her off-speed pitches.
Aledo had six hits in the game, led by Pawlak and Addie Perry, who each had two hits. Gonzales, in addition to her pitching stats, had a double to the left-center gap.
Gonzales gave up four hits, all singles, and did not issue a walk. She threw 98 pitches in the game, 72 for strikes. The Aledo lefty also helped herself with her defense, gloving five ground balls hit back to the circle for easy outs.
The start of the game at Aledo was delayed for 90 minutes because of lighting.
Aledo, 33-3, will travel to Burleson Centennial Thursday for game two of the three-game series. Aledo needs to win one more game to advance to the state semifinals.
