The Yoakum Bulldogs used the running of a pair of quarterbacks to open up a 38-7 lead in Thursday’s 3A Division 1 state championship before holding off a furious Grandview rally to hold on for a 45-29 victory.
Yoakum, which uses the quarterback as the main running back like a wildcat formation, had quarterbacks Jace Morales and X’Zaier Barnett rush for nearly 400 yards and six touchdowns.
Barnett (11) rushed for 196 yards and five touchdowns on 17 carries, while Morales (0) had 199 yards and one touchdown on 20 carries. The quarterbacks rush for 88 percept of the carries Morales is the only Yoakum quarterback to attempt a pass and he went 1-2 for nine yards.
Grandview had 209 rushing yards and 192 passing yards, but the huge deficit was too much to overcome. Grandview quarterback Mason Landers threw for 192 yards and three touchdowns and he rushed for 33 yards.
Elijah Dominguez led Grandview with 83 rushing yards.
Yoakum scored on their first four drives of the game to open a 24-0 lead and the Zebras could not cut the lead to less than 16 (the final score) the rest of the game.
