On a day when there were storms all around, Aledo quarterback Jake Bishop rained touchdowns to sophomore receiver Jo Jo Earle in the Bearcats’ 51-14 victory over Bentonville, Ark., at Independence Stadium in Sherveport, La.
Bishop, who completed 10 of 14 passes for 237 yards, found Earle on TD plays of 5, 62 and 65 yards. Earle had had 5 receptions for 161 yards in the game. Bishop and Earle also connected on a fourth play that finished in the end zone, however that one was called back by a penalty.
One week after not getting called for a single penalty in their win at Denton Guyer, the Bearcats were flagged 9 time for 99 yards against Bentonville.
The Bearcats also got two TD runs from Tre Owens, his only two carries of the game. Jase McClellan led the rushing game for Aledo, with 16 carries for 88 yards and a TD run of 9 yards.
The second team offense played the entire fourth quarter and put together a 13-play, 67-yard scoring drive. Avery Jackson, who finished with 7 carried for 39 yards, capped the drive with a 2-yard TD run.
The rain in Shreveport held off until the Aledo game was over, but nothing could stop the dimes that Bishop was dropping to Earle. The pair connected on Aledo’s first drive of the game with a 5-yard TD. The drive was set up by the Aledo defense.
Defensive back Collin Johnson intercepted a Bentonville pass and returned the ball 19 yards to the Tiger 24. It took just 5 plays for Aledo to take a 7-0 lead.
The Bearcat defense then forced a three-and-out and Tre Owens returned the Bentonville punt 31 yards to the Tiger 32. McClellan started the drive with a 20-yard run then gave Aledo a 14-0 lead three plays later with his 9-yard TD run.
Early in the second quarter, Owens scored his second TD to cap a 6-play, 45-yard drive.
Aledo got the ball right back when Bentonville fumbled on the kickoff return and Ryan Anderson recovered and returned it to the Tiger 10-yardline. Harper Smith kicked a 24-yard fieldgoal with 9:25 left in the first half to give Aledo a 24-0 lead.
Bentonville then cut the Aledo lead to 24-7 with a 40-yard TD pass, but the Bearcat offense wasn’t finished in the first half.
Owens got his second TD run of the half to cap a 10-play, 59-yard drive with 2:46 left in the half to make it 30-7. With less than a minute left in the half, Bentonville quarterback tried a quick punt from shotgun on fourth down. Owens raced back and fielded the punt over his shoulder then turned around at the 1 yard line and returned it 37 yards.
With less than a minute in the half and the ball at the 38, Bishop rolled left and found Earle open down the sideline for a 62-yard TD pass to give Aledo a 37-7 halftime lead.
However, the most impressive of the TDs was the 65-yard TD in the third quarter. Bishop threw the ball about 30 yards downfield, where Earle out jumped Bentonville defensive back Levi Bennett for the ball. The former running back then showed off his running skills to get around Bennett and another defender on his way to the end zone.
Aledo improves to 2-0 with the victory and will open district play at Burleson Centennial next Friday.
