Bearcats hold off Wylie, 3-2

The Aledo Bearcat soccer team got first half goals from Brandon Wrinkle, Connor Steele and Harper Smith then had to hold off a Abilene Wylie rally for a 3-2 win Tuesday night at Bearcat Stadium.

Aledo improves to 2-2-1 in District 4-5A, while Wylie falls to 0-4-1.

Wrinkle got Aledo on the scoreboard at the the 20:12 mark of the first half with a goal from the right side after taking a pass from Chris Aguilar. Aledo had peppered the Wylie goalie with shots in the opening 20 minutes but he came up with several good saves to keep the ball out of the net.

Wylie needed a little more than four minutes to get the equalizer from Peyton Wood at the 15:54 mark of the first half.

Steele’s goal came just 90 seconds later when he got a pass to the left of the goal from Clayton Holt and he pounded the ball home.

Smith scored his goal with six seconds left in the first half when a scramble in front of the goal ended up with Smith finding the back of the net.

Wylie cut the deficit to 3-2 when Wood scored his second goal with 19:15 left in the game. In the final minute the Bulldogs pushed the ball into the offensive zone and a shot on goal just slide wide with only a few seconds left.

The third-place Bearcats will travel to first-place Wichita Falls for a game on Tuesday.
