Aledo Puts Up Video Game Numbers Against Centennial To Take Over Sole Possession of First

The Aledo Bearcats took over sole possession of first place in District 3-5A Division I with a 64-21 victory over previously undefeated Burleson Centennial. Coming into the game, the Spartans had given up just 53 points in the 6-0 start to the season.

The Bearcat offense put up video-game numbers from the first snap of the game, needing just 7 offensive snaps to score their first two touchdowns. Quarterback Hauss Hejny accounted for more than 400 yards and six touchdowns by himself.

In the first half, Hejny had a pair of TD passes to Jalen Pope from 43 yards and 42 yards. He also had TD runs of 75 yards and 47 yards.

In the second half Hejny had 42 and 78 yard TD passes to Gavin Olenjack.

After starting off the season 0-2, Aledo has now won six in a row and have averaged more than 60 points per game in those six victories.

“We are young on both sides of the ball, so it just took some maturing throughout the season,” Hejny said after the game. “We’ve gotten better and better each week.”

Aledo is 6-0 in district play, while Centennial, Denton Ryan and Northwest are 4-1. Aledo now has victories against both Centennial and Northwest and will face Ryan in Denton next week. Aledo, which has now won 109 consecutive district games dating back more than 15 years, will clinch first place in district with a victory over Ryan.

In the game against Centennial, the Spartans scored on their first two possessions of the game, then the Aledo defense began coming up with tackles for loss against the Centennial option plays. Centennial managed just one TD over the final three quarters.

After the Bearcats took the 28-14 lead into halftime, Aledo scored on five of six possessions in the second half.

Aledo opened the second half with the two touchdown passes to Olenjack. Aledo then got a 16 yard TD run from Davhon Keys, a 7-yard TD from from Hawk Patrick-Daniels and a 15-yard TD run from Ryan Cox.

“We knew we could beat this team if we just went out and played our game,” Hejny said. “I am surprised we hung 64 on them.”

The defense helped by giving the Aledo offense good field possession throughout the second half.

Aledo had a 42-21 lead midway though the third quarter when the Aledo defense came up with a turnover on downs and three fumble recoveries on Centennial’s next four possessions. Aledo led 64-21 after scoring touchdowns following three of those four stops.
