The first half of Aledo’s 73-7 victory over Saginaw showcased just how dangerous the Bearcat offense can be.
The Bearcats scored on their first offensive play, just 12 seconds into the game when quarterback Hauss Hejny threw a 75-yard pass to Jalen Pope to make it 7-0.
Aledo scored on nine of 10 possession in the first half. Hejny threw for two touchdowns and ran for two touchdowns as his dual-threat ability was on full display. On the Bearcats second touchdown drive, Hejny had a 41-yard run, then capped the 8-play drive with an 18-yard run to make it 14-0 with 6:31 left in the first quarter.
The Aledo defense also came up with big plays, recovering two fumbles in the first half and coming up with an interception in the second half.
Defensive tackle Bryon Wheeler recovered a fumble on the Saginaw 3 to set up Hawk Patrick-Daniels’ three-yard TD run. Patrick-Daniels scored twice in limited playing time, giving him nine rushing touchdowns in the last three games. The 3-yard run made it 21-0 with 5:43 left in the first quarter.
Saginaw had a huge kick return after that to set up their lone score. On a third and eight play, Saginaw’s Giovanni Petrella scrambled up the middle to score on a nine-yard run to cut the lead to 21-7 with 3:59 left in the first quarter. But it was all Bearcats for the rest of the game. Hejny ripped off a 60-yard run up the middle to score with 2:45 left in the first quarter to make it 28-7.
After Saginaw went three and out, Patrick-Daniels scored from 8 yards out to make it 35-7 with 25 seconds left in the opening quarter.
Caleb Pope got into the box score with a 4-yard TD with 9:20 left before the end of the half to make it 42-7. Pope’s bruising running style allowed him to score three touchdowns in the game.
Early in the second quarter, Aledo’s Andrew Parkhurst tackled the Saginaw punter before he could kick the ball to give the Bearcats the ball at the Saginaw 28. Hejny threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Pope to make it 49-0. Jalen’s Pope’s third touchdown catch, 13 yards from Brant Hayden, make it 56-7 with 5:31 left in the first half.
The Bearcats got the ball back at the Saginaw 24 on a fumble recovery by Carson Dempsy with less than two minutes to play in the half. Three straight runs by Caleb Pope gave Aledo it’s ninth touchdown of the half.
Pope’s hardest run on the night came in the second half when he scored with 7:11 left in the third quarter. Pope ran through two Saginaw defenders to get into the endzone on the play.
