Aledo Edges Birdville, 3-2, in 11 innings

Ladycats advance to Regional Quarterfinal

Brenlee Gonzales and Taylor McKean combined for 17 strikeouts and one earned run to help the Aledo Ladycat softball team to a 3-2 win in the 1-game area playoff series Thursday against Birdville.

After Birdville jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with an unearned run, Ana Flores and Delaney Rosser hit back-to-back triples in the fourth inning and Marina Taveras hit a sacrifice fly to give Aledo a 2-1 lead.

Taveras also put the ball in play in the 11th inning to score Aledo’s winning run.

In the top of the 11th, Rosser reached base on an error and was then bunted to second by Flores. Taveras then hit a ball to third but the throw ended up in right field and Rosser scored with the winning run.

Taylor McKean started the game and pitched five innings, striking out seven, walking two and give up the lone earned run. Gonzales came in to pitch in the sixth inning and shad 10 strikeouts in six innings and picked up with victory.

Gonzales gave up four hits and one walk, but pitched herself out of trouble in both the ninth and 11th innings, when Birdville put runners in scoring position. Birdville had runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but Gonzales got two strikeouts to end the threat.

Birdville had runners on second and third in the 11th inning with only one out. Gonzales got the win by getting a strikeout and a ground out to end the game.

Aledo was three outs away from winning in seven innings, but Birdville scored an unearned run and had a runner on second with one out before Gonzales got two strikeouts to send the game into extra innings.

The Ladycats improved to 30-3 with the win and will play Joshua in the regional quarterfinal round of the playoffs.
