Balanced Bearcats Roll Over Joshua, 58-14, Clinch District Title

Quarterback Jake Bishop passed for three touchdowns to lead Aledo (9-0, 7-0) to a 58-14 Distict 5-5A victory over Joshua. The Bearcats also had three backup running backs all score touchdowns and backup kicker Micco Little had a 27-yard field goal.

Bishop played just 30 seconds into the second quarter, but completed all six of his passes for 165 yards. He had scoring passes of 65 and 52 yards to Jo Jo Earle, and a 10 yard TD strike to Mylen Hayhurst.

With the victory, Aledo clinches first place in district. In 5-5A(II), Burleson Centennial will finish in second playce, Midlothian will be the third place team, and Everman will be the fourth place team. Even if Everman loses to Joshua, they have tie-breakers on Burleson and Cleburne.

In Friday’s game, Aledo got the ball at the Joshua 45 after a short punt and needed just 6 plays to take a 7-0 lead.

Two of the plays were passes to passes to Hampton Fay that covered 31 of the 45 yards. Tre Owens completed the drive with his 8-yard TD run.

Aledo’s second touchdown came on a 1-play scoring drive. Bishop his Earle on a short pass to the right and the sophomore wide receiver did back-to-back spin moves to get away from Owl defenders then outran the rest of the defense for a 65-yard scoring play.

The Bearcats needed just 4 plays to cover 51 yards on their third TD drive.

Bishop hit Mylen Hayhurst on the right sideline, who then slipped a defender to complete the 10-yard scoring play. Harper Smith’s third extra point kick made it 21-0 with 50 second left in the first quarter.

Aledo got another 1-play scoring drive for their fourth TD when Bishop found Earle behind the defense for a 52-yard TD. Less than 30 seconds into the second quarter Aledo had a 28-0 lead and only need 12 offense plays to roll up that score. Bishop’s night was done.

The Bearcat’s fifth score came on a 29-yard Tre Owens TD run. Owens, who started the game and led the team with 89 rushing yards, was finished for the night after that TD run made it 34-0 with 7:42 left in the first half.

The Aledo special teams then came up with two fumble recoveries on kickoffs.

The first fumble recovery resulted in Ryan Anderson’s 4-yard TD run to make it 41-0 with 5:50 left in the first half.

The second fumble recovery led to back up kicker Micco Little’s 27-yard field goal to make it 44-0 with 4:02 left in the first half.

Joshua got on the scoreboard with 11 seconds left in the first half.

A running clock made for a quick second half.

Running back Matt Tague, just called up from the JV team, had a pair of TD runs in the second half to close out the Aledo scoring.
