The Aledo Bearcats used their final scrimmage of the 2021 season to outscore Arlington Bowie 9 touchdowns to 1.
In the 10 minute timed period to end the scrimmage, Aledo outscored Bowie 14-6.
The Bearcats used nine plays to cover 70 yards in 4:04, with running back Ryan Williams scoring on a 10-yard run. Williams had five carried for 45 yards in that opening drive.
The Aledo defense, which looked stout in the non-timed portion of the scrimmage, gave up a 33-yard pass on second and 24 to give the Volunteers life. On third down from the 9-yardline, Bowie scored on a pass that was originally ruled out of bounds. But after a long delay, the officials ruled the receiver had one foot inbounds.
The Bowie PAT kick hit the cross bar and Aledo led 7-6 with just over a minute left in the scrimmage.
The Aledo offense then went to work by hitting sideline passes to score a second TD with just 5 seconds left on the clock. Back up quarterback Brant Hayden threw the 20-yard TD pass to Brian Fleming.
In the non-timed part of the scrimmage, Aledo scored seven touchdowns and came up with two interceptions. The Bearcats were making all of the plays against their 6A opponent.
Williams picked up yards in chunks as Aledo’s starting running back, scoring in both the timed and non-timed part of the scrimmage.
Tight end Jason Llewellyn looked to be in mid-season form and scored in the non-timed portion of the scrimmage. He also had a reception just before he scored where he broke several tackles as he put the Bearcats inside the Bowie 5.
Aledo will open up the season against Parker County rival Weatherford 7:30 p.m. next Friday at Bearcat Stadium.
