DeMarco Roberts rushed 28 times for 224 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead Aledo to a 45-27 victory over Frisco on Christmas Eve at the Ford Center in Frisco.
In his last two playoff games, Roberts has totaled 448 yards and eight touchdowns. In the three playoff games, his totals are 599 yards and 10 touchdowns.
So is Roberts a defensive back who is just playing running back his senior year to help out the team? His speed, balance and moves against Frisco look like he has been playing running back for years.
The only thing that kept Roberts from scoring five touchdowns on the night was having his helmet knocked off one play before JoJo Earle scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Against Frisco, he scored on runs of 10, 10, 30 and 23 yards. His 44-yard run on the second play of the game set up Aledo’s first score. The Bearcats needed less than 2 minutes to open the scoring. Earle scored on a 15-yard run out of the Wildcat formation to give Aledo an early 7-0 lead.
Frisco also scored on it’s opening drive to tie the game at 7-7, but the second quarter belonged to Roberts and Aledo.
His first 10-yard TD run gave Aledo a 14-7 lead with 11:02 left in the half.
Aledo never trailed in the game.
The Aledo defense also came up with key stops, including a blocked punt by defensive tackle Jack Tregellas and an interception by Bryan Allen. It was the second consecutive game with an interception for the junior safety.
The punt block came right after Roberts’ first touchdown. Aledo used to short field to take a 21-7 lead with 8:24 left in the half on another 10-yard TD run by Roberts.
The Bearcat defense then forced a three and out to give Aledo another short field. It took just five plays for Aledo to increase the lead to 28-7 on the 30-yard TD run by Roberts.
Frisco scored just before the half to cut the lead to 28-14, but Aledo scored the first 10 points of the second half to begin pulling away.
Aledo quarterback Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi completed 12 of 17 passes for 207 yards as Aledo had 469 total yards in the game.
Aledo, 10-1, moves on to play undefeated Lovejoy (13-0) at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 31 at Globe Life Park in Arlington in the Class 5A Division II Regional Final playoff game.
